About This Vehicle

The G-Class Enthusiasts Often Forget

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class has become one of the most recognisable luxury SUVs in the world.

Yet long before celebrity ownership and AMG horsepower figures dominated headlines, Mercedes built the G-Class with a very different objective.

Durability.

Capability.

Longevity.

This 2002 G400 CDI Short Wheelbase represents an interesting chapter in that history.

Powered by the OM628 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8 diesel, it delivered an impressive 560 Nm of torque—remarkable figures for its time—and transformed the G-Class into a superb long-distance touring vehicle.

Compared with the petrol G500, the G400 CDI offered substantially better fuel economy and effortless low-speed pulling power. For drivers covering significant motorway distances, it remains an impressive machine even today.

There are, however, important trade-offs.

The diesel drivetrain is significantly more complex than the naturally aspirated M113 V8 found in the G500. Twin turbochargers, sophisticated fuel injection and additional emissions equipment inevitably increase maintenance complexity over time.

That distinction highlights an important principle in collector vehicles:

The technically superior option is not always the most desirable one.

While the G400 CDI remains an excellent choice for those who value torque and efficiency, the G500 continues to command stronger enthusiasm among collectors thanks to its legendary reliability, mechanical simplicity and naturally aspirated V8 character.

At SPI Curated Cars, our role is not simply to identify exceptional vehicles.

It is to help clients understand why one example may prove more rewarding to own over the next decade than another.

Sometimes the best decision isn't about horsepower.

It's about engineering philosophy, long-term ownership and the kind of driving experience you want every time you turn the key.

SPI Curated Cars

We navigate international collector car acquisitions with one principle above all: buy the right car, not simply the available one.

For buyers who know the difference between a deal and a trap.
